Having the ability to age is a beautiful thing, but the skincare woes that accompany becoming an older adult aren’t always a fun bonus. Whether you embrace aging or you feel wary of it, no one wants complications in their makeup routine. Unfortunately, as the skin matures, mature eyes can come with it—and mature eyes can mean hooded eyes, sensitive eyes, or eyes that become crepey with reduced elasticity. This can often make eye makeup application more difficult. While you might start running into trouble with mascara and eyeliner application, eyeshadow is often the area where makeup gets the most challenging.
Ultimately, “the best type of eyeshadows for aging eyes are cream and liquid shadows,” explains Los Angeles–based makeup artist Sophia Porter. “These types of shadows are flexible with the skin, typically set down on their own, can be used as a base for powder shadows, and sheer out nicely. Sometimes the lids can be dry and crepey, and liquids and creams help lessen this look. These easily apply to the lid more evenly than a powder would.”
Thanks to our two experts’ insight, we’ve nailed down some must-read makeup tips for mature skin, along with the best eyeshadows for this skin type.

It's about glam time you treated yourself.

Eyeshadow isn’t one size fits all. Eye shape, skin tone, and yes, skin type, each play a role in how different formulas and pigments will set onto the skin—mature skin included.
For example, cream or satin-finish shadows work better than powders for minimizing texture and dryness. “These work best since they’re not too matte or drying to the skin,” explains Porter. “Having a luminous, satin finish helps bring life back into the skin without it looking too frosty or glittery.”
Neutral tones and soft colors, on the other hand, flatter mature skin without emphasizing fine lines. That’s because they “aren’t harsh and don’t stand out too much on the skin,” the pro says. “It gives a nice cohesive look and won’t draw attention to any skin issues.”
Mature skin is also much more susceptible to smudging and creasing, so it’s important to focus on long-lasting, sturdy formulas.
“The skin on the lids can become loose or crepey, making it harder for products to adhere and last throughout the day,” Porter says. “Products that are long-wearing will stay put and not crease.”
We recommend opting for buildable pigments that allow for layering without caking or creasing.

While famously known for its setting powder, LAURA MERCIER makes a stunning soft shadow stick that blends, smudges, and lines effortlessly. We love the easy transportability of this product, which makes it perfect for touchups on the go. If a whole eyeshadow look isn’t your vibe, you can use it to line your eyes for a little burst of excitement.

No one does mature skin quite like LAURA GELLER, so you just know a stunning neutral palette will meet all your needs. The brand’s signature cream-to-powder formula delivers rich, long-lasting pigment with no creasing, fallout, or transfer, and it’s perfect for blending.

Easy to apply, easy on the bank account. This long-wear liquid goes on easily with one swipe and can be blended to perfection. It also layers well, so you can play around with how much pigment you need.

While metallics can at times be tricky for mature skin (since sometimes their multidimensional nature can enhance texture or lines), this selection right here was clearly made with the aging woman in mind. Lightweight and easily blendable, this radiant, long-wear formula was designed to be crease-proof and worn with confidence.

OK, Miss Ariana! The Wicked star clearly wanted to appeal to the masses when she launched this bad boy, which not only delivers stunning pigment but also offers sturdy long-wear that won’t crease. While the formula is easily buildable, one swipe may be all you need. It also comes with a multifaceted applicator so you create any look you choose.

When we think of a decadent, creamy, statement-making eyeshadow formula, this comes to mind—and a little goes a long way. A slight swipe can easily be blended into an easy, on-the-go eye look that won’t crease, fade, or smudge. Go bold or go home.

Girls just wanna have fun—at any age! If you’re looking to spice up your life (and your eye look), this is the answer. Made with a bright, pigmented, creaseless, cream-to-powder formula, this eyeshadow practically guarantees you’ll be turning heads.

If you want your look to really pop, these liquid metallics are your answer. And trust us, they won’t budge, so be prepared to commit. They’re also buildable and packaged with a precision tip to mix, match, layer, and play.
As Porter pointed out, mature skin shouldn’t feel excluded from having fun with festive shades. But Los Angeles–based celebrity makeup artist Ashley Gomila stresses the importance of applying minimally with a light wash of color. “Too much glittery pigment tends to emphasize texture and settle into fine lines,” she says. “This makes the eyelids look heavier, which is why soft satins and mattes are far more flattering.”
Simply put: “Mature lids need that extra grip to prevent creasing and help shadow blend smoothly throughout the day,” Gomila says.
For an easy, hassle-free product, we recommend the TEEEZ COSMETICS Battle Prep Eye Primer. It’s also clean, vegan, and glides on effortlessly.
“Applying eyeshadow too low or dragging color outward can visually pull the eyes down,” Gomila says. “Lifting the placement slightly above the crease and angling it upward creates a more open, lifted look.”
For starters, you can’t skip primer. But once that’s out of the way, “Using long-wearing liquid or cream products, and applying in thin layers will be a huge help,” Porter says. “I also like to add thin layers of corresponding powder eyeshadow colors to set or intensify the base. Or if I’m trying to keep things soft, a thin layer of setting powder works great as well.”
Despite some discrepancy, Porter insists shimmer works fine on mature skin. You’ll just want to apply with caution.
“I like to gradually apply in layers for a soft effect,” she says. “It brings more light to the eye and a nice finish that doesn’t look dull.”
Good news for anyone scared to go big and bold: “Soft neutral taupe has a balanced mix of warm and cool undertones,” Gomila explains. “These undertones enhance natural depth, and mimic the natural shadows of the eye, giving a more sculpted and youthful appearance.”
It can often seem like mature skin gets the short end of the stick when it comes to eyeshadow options that won’t crease or budge—but with the proper priming and application techniques, we promise eyeshadow doesn’t discriminate. Now, like with all skin types, there’s no beauty product that’s one-size-fits-all, so specific eyeshadows may flatter mature skin more than others. Luckily, there’s a product out there for everyone, and there are formulas designed with mature skin in mind.
